Director Development Program

Becoming a director is not simply the next step in an executive career. It requires a different mindset, different accountabilities and a different way of contributing to organizational performance.

The Director Development Program helps experienced executives make that transition. It develops the judgment, governance understanding and boardroom effectiveness required to contribute confidently and create value as a director.

The objective is not simply to teach participants about Boards. It is to prepare them to think, contribute and exercise judgment as directors.

Executive Experience Is Valuable. But Governing Is Different from Managing.

Successful executives build their careers by making decisions, directing resources, solving problems and delivering results. Directors operate differently.

They govern rather than manage. They exercise fiduciary duties to the organization, oversee rather than execute, challenge without taking over, and contribute individual expertise while remaining collectively accountable for Board decisions.

The Director Development Program concentrates on five areas critical to making that transition:

1. Shift from Executive to Governance Mindset

Understand how the role, perspective and exercise of authority change when moving from management into the boardroom.

2. Understand Fiduciary Duties and Director Accountabilities

Develop a practical understanding of the duties, responsibilities and accountabilities that accompany Board service.

3. Strengthen Financial and Risk Oversight

Learn how directors should approach financial performance, capital allocation, risk and assurance from an oversight rather than management perspective.

4. Develop Constructive Challenge and Boardroom Effectiveness

Build the judgment and interpersonal discipline required to ask better questions, challenge management constructively, navigate disagreement and contribute effectively to collective Board decisions.

5. Prepare for Board Service

Understand how to position your experience for Board opportunities, assess whether a Board is right for you, conduct appropriate due diligence and build a credible Board-ready profile.

What Participants Gain

Participants leave with a clearer understanding of what changes when they move from the executive suite to the boardroom, what is expected of them as directors, and how they can use their executive experience without reverting to an executive mindset.

The program is designed to develop directors who can contribute confidently while understanding the boundaries of their role, exercise independent judgment, provide constructive challenge and contribute to the collective effectiveness of the Board.

Who Should Participate?

The Director Development Program is designed for senior executives, C-suite leaders and experienced professionals preparing for their first significant Board appointment or seeking to strengthen their effectiveness early in their Board careers.

The program comprises 15 hours of facilitated learning, with an emphasis on practical application, discussion and the realities of Board service rather than governance theory alone.

The Director Development Program is intentionally designed as a small, highly engaged cohort experience.

Participation is by application to preserve the quality of discussion and peer learning. Applications are reviewed to create cohorts whose participants bring the senior-level experience, perspective and commitment necessary to contribute meaningfully to the program and to one another.

Submitting an application does not guarantee admission.

Investment:  15-hour selective cohort program. Investment: CAD $4,950 per participant.

There is no fee to apply. Program fees are payable only following acceptance.

Private programs can also be designed for organizations seeking to develop a cohort of Board-ready senior executives.

The Transition

Being an accomplished executive does not automatically prepare you to be an effective director.

The Director Development Program helps experienced leaders make that transition deliberately, developing the mindset, judgment and practical capabilities required to contribute effectively in the boardroom.
